What is LCX?
LCX is the token of LCX AG, a crypto exchange and tokenization company in Vaduz, Liechtenstein, that has held a business license since 2018. Holding or paying with LCX cuts trading fees on the LCX exchange by up to 50%, and the company is building Liberty Chain, a layer-2 network for tokenized assets where LCX can pay gas fees. The token has a fixed maximum supply of 950 million.
Utility Lens
What LCX actually does
Gives customers of the LCX exchange and its tokenization services a way to pay fees and get discounts, and is planned as a gas token on LCX's Liberty Chain.
- Real-world usage
- earlyThe token gives real fee discounts on a live exchange, but LCX's EEA services are paused pending MiCA approval and Liberty Chain is still at the early-access stage.
- Token necessity
- optionalCustomers can trade on the LCX exchange without holding LCX; the token mainly lowers fees.
- Decentralization
- centralizedLCX AG issued the token, runs the exchange and decides how the token is used.
- Track record
- provenLCX AG has been licensed since 2018 and the token launched in 2019; in January 2022 a hacker drained one of its hot wallets of almost $8 million.
What it’s used for
LCX customers can pay fees with the token and get trading-fee discounts of up to 50% on the LCX exchange, which is not open to people in the United States or the United Kingdom. Most holders outside LCX's own platform simply trade the token on other exchanges. LCX is also inviting early-access sign-ups for Liberty Chain, a tokenization network built on Optimism's OP Stack, where LCX can pay gas fees.

ISO 20022: claim vs. reality
- What’s documented
- No documented ISO 20022 product. LCX's token, Liberty Chain and regulatory pages we reviewed make no ISO 20022 claims. In a March 2022 community AMA, LCX's CEO was asked whether there were plans to make LCX tokens ISO 20022 compliant and answered by describing an exchange revamp, without addressing ISO 20022.
- What you’ll hear online
- LCX is one of a short list of 'approved' ISO 20022-compliant cryptocurrencies.
- Reality check
- ISO 20022 is a bank messaging standard; it does not certify or endorse any cryptocurrency, and the official ISO 20022 site says there is a lot of misleading information online about compliant cryptocurrencies. LCX's real-world link is as a licensed exchange and tokenization business, which has nothing to do with ISO 20022 messages.
How LCX works
LCX began as the Liechtenstein Cryptoassets Exchange and created the LCX token in March 2019 as an Ethereum ERC-20 token. The company says it can be used to pay fees across its services, from exchange trading to custody and token-sale fees, and gives holders discounts on trading fees. In July 2026 LCX moved to an upgraded contract called LCX Token 2.0, and Coinbase converted customer balances automatically at one new token per old token.
LCX's newer plan is Liberty Chain, a layer-2 network built on Optimism's OP Stack and secured by Ethereum. LCX describes it as infrastructure for tokenizing real-world assets such as real estate, bonds and commodities, with optional compliance tools like on-chain identity checks and whitelists. Account abstraction is meant to let users pay Liberty Chain gas in LCX. As of October 2026 LCX's site invites early-access sign-ups rather than describing a busy live network.
The company's regulatory position matters for the token. LCX AG held registrations under Liechtenstein's Blockchain Act, but says those registrations for MiCA-covered services have expired. Its application for authorisation under the EU's MiCA rules is under review, and its services for EEA clients are paused until then. Separately, in July 2026 LCX opened a waitlist for LCX Exchange USA, a planned exchange for American users.
Key moments
- 2018LCX AG is established in Liechtenstein and obtains its business license.
- 2019The LCX token is created on Ethereum in March.
- 2022In January a hacker drains one of LCX's hot wallets of almost $8 million; LCX later says about 60% of the stolen funds were frozen.
- 2026LCX pauses its MiCA-covered services for EEA clients while it awaits authorisation, Coinbase supports the 1:1 upgrade to LCX Token 2.0 in July, and LCX opens a waitlist for a US exchange.
Supply
LCX has a fixed maximum supply of 950 million tokens. The original supply was 1 billion, and LCX burned 50 million tokens in 2019 and 2020. Company reserve, team and advisor tokens were released on lockups and vesting schedules, and the company says most tokens are now held by the community. The 2026 upgrade to LCX Token 2.0 swapped tokens 1:1 and did not change the cap.
Risks to understand
- Single-company dependence: the token's value as a discount and gas token depends on LCX AG's business and decisions.
- Regulatory status: LCX AG says it is not currently authorised under MiCA and its services for EEA clients are paused while its application is reviewed.
- Exchange security: a 2022 hot-wallet hack took almost $8 million, and LCX says only about 60% was frozen.
- Unproven new products: Liberty Chain and the planned US exchange are at an early stage.
- ISO 20022 hype: LCX has not published any ISO 20022 product, so 'ISO 20022 coin' labels have no documented basis.
LCX FAQ

It can pay fees on LCX's services and cuts trading fees on the LCX exchange by up to 50%. LCX also plans for it to pay gas on Liberty Chain.

No. LCX says its exchange is not available to people in the United States or the United Kingdom, though it has opened a waitlist for a separate US exchange.

There is no documented basis for that label: LCX has not published an ISO 20022 product, and ISO 20022 does not certify cryptocurrencies.
What was LCX Token 2.0?
A 2026 upgrade to a new token contract, with balances swapped one-for-one. Coinbase handled the conversion automatically for its customers in late July 2026.
