What is XDC Network?

XDC Network is a public blockchain that runs Ethereum-style smart contracts and markets itself to trade-finance firms, banks and fintechs. Its native coin, XDC, pays transaction fees and is staked by the masternodes that produce blocks.

Utility Lens

What XDC Network actually does

Gives businesses a low-fee, EVM-compatible chain for tokenizing trade documents, invoices and other financial assets and settling payments.

Real-world usage
earlyThe chain is live and hosts tokenization and trade-finance pilots, but verifiable, sustained enterprise volume is still small.
Token necessity
essentialXDC pays every transaction fee and must be staked to run a block-producing masternode.
Decentralization
limitedBlock production rests with a 108-member masternode committee that requires a large XDC stake, and the founding team and foundation hold a large share of supply.
Track record
provenMainnet has run since 2019 and moved to XDPoS 2.0 in 2024, with no widely reported protocol-level hack.

How we rate

What it’s used for

Developers deploy Ethereum-compatible smart contracts on XDC, and trade-finance and tokenization projects use it to digitize invoices and similar instruments. The XDC project also promotes an 'XDC Payments' offering that it says supports ISO 20022 message formats. Independent data on enterprise volumes is limited, so treat ecosystem claims cautiously.

Evidence of real use

  • Under XDPoS 2.0, a committee of 108 masternodes produces and finalizes blocks using a HotStuff-based BFT protocol. Source
  • The XDC Payments page says the product integrates ISO 20022 formats such as pain.001 and pacs.008. Source
  • The XDC Foundation markets 'ISO 20022-native support systems' to enterprises alongside EVM compatibility. Source

ISO 20022: claim vs. reality

What’s documented
The XDC project's own sites describe XDC Payments as integrating ISO 20022 message formats (for example pain.001 and pacs.008) and advertise 'ISO 20022-native support systems.' These are product features described by the project. XDC, XinFin and the XDC Foundation do not appear on the ISO 20022 Registration Management Group roster.
What you’ll hear online
XDC is an 'ISO 20022 certified' coin and is part of the standard that Swift and banks now run on.
Reality check
ISO 20022 is a bank messaging standard; it does not certify or endorse any cryptocurrency. Any software, including tools built on XDC, can create or read ISO 20022 messages. Doing so makes integration with bank systems easier, but it is not a seal of approval and does not create demand for the XDC coin.

ISO 20022, explained

How XDC Network works

XDC uses a delegated proof-of-stake system called XDPoS. Operators who lock a large amount of XDC can run masternodes, and a committee of 108 of them takes turns proposing and voting on blocks. Version 2.0 added a HotStuff-style Byzantine fault-tolerant protocol, which gives fast finality, and a way to identify validators that misbehave. Masternode operators earn newly minted XDC for their work, and holders can also stake through third-party services.

Because the chain is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine, developers can reuse Ethereum tools and contract code. Addresses can be shown with an 'xdc' prefix instead of '0x', which matters when you copy them between wallets and exchanges. Fees are a tiny fraction of a cent, which suits use cases with many small transactions. Like Ethereum, XDC uses accounts and gas, so anyone familiar with MetaMask-style wallets will recognize how it works once the network is added.

The project's pitch is trade finance: turning paper-heavy documents like invoices and bills of lading into digital assets that can be financed and settled faster. XDC also promotes payment and messaging tools that it says map to ISO 20022 formats used by banks. Many of these efforts are partnerships and pilots, so it is worth checking whether a specific use case is live and processing real volume before relying on the claim.

Key moments

  1. 2017XinFin, the organization behind the network, is founded and begins its token sale.
  2. 2019XDC mainnet launches with the XDPoS consensus model.
  3. 2024XDPoS 2.0 brings a BFT committee and faster finality.

Supply

XDC launched with a large genesis supply, and more than 37 billion XDC existed by 2024. New XDC is minted as masternode rewards, so total supply grows slowly over time. A large portion was allocated to the founders, ecosystem and foundation at launch.

Risks to understand

  • Concentration: a small committee of high-stake masternodes and large insider allocations mean a limited group can heavily influence the network.
  • Enterprise claims are often promotional; independent evidence of large, sustained trade-finance volume is scarce.
  • Address format confusion: mixing 'xdc' and '0x' prefixes can cause failed or misdirected transfers on some platforms.
  • Fierce competition from bigger smart-contract chains and bank-run tokenization networks.

XDC Network FAQ

What is XDC used for?

XDC pays transaction fees on the network and is staked by masternode operators who produce blocks and earn rewards.

Is XDC the same as XinFin?

XinFin is the organization that launched the network; the chain is now branded XDC Network and supported by the XDC Foundation.

Is XDC really ISO 20022 compliant?

Its payment tools are described as using ISO 20022 message formats, but there is no official ISO 20022 certification for any cryptocurrency.
