What is KuCoin Token?

KuCoin Token (KCS) is the in-house token of the KuCoin exchange. Holding or paying with it lowers trading fees and earns loyalty rewards, and KuCoin burns KCS regularly toward a 100 million supply target. KuCoin agreed to exit the US for at least two years after pleading guilty to federal charges in January 2025.

How we rate

What it’s used for

KuCoin traders pay fees in KCS to get a discount and hold it to reach loyalty levels that return a share of activity in KCS. KuCoin uses part of its profits to buy back and burn KCS. Outside KuCoin, KCS has little practical use.

How KuCoin Token works

KCS launched in 2017 as an Ethereum-based token with 200 million units. Its main job is inside KuCoin: if you pay trading fees in KCS you get a discount, and holding it can place you in a loyalty program that returns some value in KCS. These benefits are set by KuCoin and can be changed or ended at any time.

KuCoin buys back and burns KCS on a recurring schedule, aiming to reduce supply to 100 million tokens. That program, plus the fee perks, is what supports demand. Because all of it depends on KuCoin's profits and policy, KCS behaves more like a rewards program for one company than a network token. Its fortunes also track KuCoin's legal standing, which has shifted sharply since US prosecutors charged the exchange in 2024.

Risks to understand

  • Regulatory history: KuCoin's operator pleaded guilty to a federal charge after prosecutors said its weak controls let criminal proceeds flow through the platform.
  • Company dependence: every KCS perk and burn is controlled by KuCoin.
  • Security history: KuCoin suffered a large hot-wallet hack in 2020.
