What is HTX DAO?
HTX is the token of HTX DAO, a governance community linked to the HTX exchange, which was known as Huobi until 2023. It replaced the older Huobi Token (HT) in 2024, offers fee perks on the exchange, and is bought back and burned with part of the exchange's listing-related revenue. HTX does not serve US residents.
Utility Lens
What HTX DAO actually does
HTX gives HTX exchange users fee deductions and votes in DAO governance, while part of exchange revenue is used to buy back and burn it.
- Real-world usage
- speculativeBeyond fee perks on one offshore exchange, HTX has little independent use, and most activity is trading.
- Token necessity
- optionalYou can trade on HTX without the token; it only reduces fees and grants votes.
- Decentralization
- centralizedDespite the DAO label, the token's utility, buybacks and listings all depend on a single exchange operator.
- Track record
- developingThe HTX token replaced HT in 2024; the related exchange and bridge lost roughly $115 million to hackers in November 2023.
What it’s used for
HTX exchange users hold the token to pay trading fees at a discount and to vote on community-driven listings through the DAO. The exchange reports that half of the revenue generated from these community listings is used to repurchase and burn HTX.

How HTX DAO works
HTX the token is tied to HTX the exchange, formerly Huobi, one of the older centralized exchanges in crypto. Justin Sun, the founder of TRON, has served as an adviser to the exchange. In 2024 the exchange began converting its older Huobi Token (HT) into HTX, presenting the new token as the governance asset of HTX DAO, a community that votes on matters such as which tokens the exchange lists.
The token's value proposition rests on three things the exchange controls: fee deductions when you pay trading fees with HTX, DAO votes on listings, and a buyback program in which half of the revenue from community-voted listings is used to buy HTX and burn it. Its supply is measured in the hundreds of trillions of tokens, so each token's price is a tiny fraction of a cent.
Key moments
- 2013Huobi exchange is founded.
- 2023Huobi rebrands as HTX; in November, the exchange and the Heco bridge are hacked for roughly $115 million, with losses covered by the exchange.
- 2024HTX begins converting Huobi Token (HT) into the new HTX DAO token.
- 2026The SEC resolves its 2023 case against Justin Sun and TRON-related entities with a $10 million wash-trading settlement for Rainberry and dismissal of other claims.
Supply
HTX has a maximum supply of just under 1 quadrillion tokens, with most of it already in circulation. HTX DAO burns tokens using a share of exchange revenue, and it reported burning tens of trillions of HTX during 2025. The huge unit count means headline burn figures sound large but should be compared against total supply.
Risks to understand
- Not available to US residents: the HTX exchange lists the United States among restricted jurisdictions.
- Single-exchange dependence: the token's perks, listings and buybacks all depend on HTX's business and decisions.
- Security history: the exchange and its affiliated bridge were hacked twice in 2023.
- Governance in name: 'DAO' voting operates within rules set by the exchange, so token holders have limited real control.
HTX DAO FAQ
Can I use HTX from the US?
No. As of October 2026, HTX restricts US residents, and using a VPN to get around that breaks its terms and can lead to frozen funds.
What happened to Huobi Token (HT)?
Starting in 2024, HTX converted HT into the HTX DAO token, which took over HT's role as the exchange's ecosystem token.
Has HTX faced US enforcement?
We found no US settlement naming the HTX exchange itself. The SEC sued Justin Sun and TRON-linked entities in 2023 and resolved that case in March 2026 with a $10 million settlement for one entity and dismissal of the remaining claims.
