What is Shiba Inu?

Shiba Inu is an Ethereum-based meme token launched in 2020 as a playful rival to Dogecoin. Its community has since built side projects such as the ShibaSwap exchange and the Shibarium layer-2 network, but SHIB's value is still driven mostly by culture and speculation.

Utility Lens

What Shiba Inu actually does

Acts as the community currency of a meme-driven ecosystem that includes a decentralized exchange and a layer-2 network.

Real-world usage
speculativeDemand is dominated by exchange trading; ecosystem apps see far less activity.
Token necessity
noneSHIB is an ordinary ERC-20 token; Shibarium fees are paid in BONE, so the products work without holding SHIB.
Decentralization
limitedThe token contract itself is simple, but Shibarium's bridge relied on a small validator set run by the core team, which the 2025 exploit exposed.
Track record
developingSHIB launched in 2020; its biggest incident was the September 2025 Shibarium bridge exploit.

How we rate

What it’s used for

Most SHIB is bought, sold and held on centralized exchanges. A smaller group uses ShibaSwap and the Shibarium network, where a separate token, BONE, pays transaction fees. SHIB itself is not required to use either product.

Role of the SHIB token:

none

Evidence of real use

  • Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, who was sent half of the SHIB supply, burned about 410 trillion SHIB and donated a large amount to an India COVID-19 relief fund in May 2021. Source
  • On September 12, 2025, the Shibarium bridge was exploited after 10 of its 12 validator signing keys were compromised, hurting projects such as K9 Finance. Source

How Shiba Inu works

SHIB is an ERC-20 token, meaning it lives on Ethereum and follows Ethereum's standard token rules. You can hold it in any Ethereum wallet and move it like other tokens, paying gas fees in ETH rather than in SHIB. The token has no mining or staking of its own; Ethereum's validators secure every SHIB transfer. That keeps the token itself simple, but it also means SHIB has no independent security model or fee role, so its usefulness depends on what the community builds around it.

The project was launched in August 2020 by an anonymous founder using the name Ryoshi. Half of the one quadrillion tokens were sent to Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, who never asked for them. In May 2021 he burned most of that stake, permanently removing it from circulation, and gave a large share to a COVID-19 relief fund in India. The rest of the original supply went into a liquidity pool on Uniswap so anyone could trade it from the start.

Over time the community added ShibaSwap, a decentralized exchange, and in August 2023 Shibarium, a layer-2 network meant to make transactions cheaper than on Ethereum. Shibarium uses the BONE token for gas, not SHIB. In September 2025 attackers drained funds from the Shibarium bridge after compromising 10 of the 12 validator keys that approved withdrawals. Several ecosystem projects lost funds, which is a reminder that bridges controlled by a small group of signers are a frequent weak point in crypto.

Key moments

  1. 2020Shiba Inu launches on Ethereum in August with a one quadrillion token supply.
  2. 2021ShibaSwap launches, and Vitalik Buterin burns roughly 410 trillion SHIB and donates more to COVID-19 relief in India.
  3. 2023Shibarium, an Ethereum layer-2 network that uses BONE for gas, goes live in August.
  4. 2025The Shibarium bridge is exploited on September 12 after 10 of 12 validator keys are compromised.

Supply

SHIB started with a fixed one quadrillion tokens and no mining or inflation. Supply only falls through burns, the largest being Vitalik Buterin's 2021 burn; community burn efforts since then have been small relative to the remaining supply.

Risks to understand

  • Value rests mainly on community attention and trading, which can fade quickly.
  • Ecosystem products depend on bridges and validator sets that have already been exploited once.
  • Huge supply and very low unit price can mislead beginners into thinking the token is cheap.
  • Large wallets and exchanges hold big shares of supply, so their moves can shift the market.

Shiba Inu FAQ

Who created Shiba Inu?

It was launched in August 2020 by an anonymous developer using the name Ryoshi, who later stepped away from the project.

Do I need SHIB to use Shibarium?

No. Shibarium transaction fees are paid in BONE, a separate token in the same ecosystem.

What was the Shibarium bridge exploit?

In September 2025 attackers compromised most of the validator keys securing the bridge between Ethereum and Shibarium and withdrew funds, affecting several ecosystem projects.
