What is Livepeer?

Livepeer is a marketplace where independent GPU operators process video for apps, converting streams into different formats and, increasingly, running AI models on live video. LPT is staked to decide which operators get work and to govern the protocol, while customers pay fees in ETH.

Utility Lens

What Livepeer actually does

Processes live and on-demand video, and runs AI models on video in real time, using a network of independent GPU operators instead of one cloud provider.

Real-world usage
growingPaid transcoding and AI inference jobs are verifiable on-chain and hit records in early 2026, though total fees are still a few hundred thousand dollars a quarter.
Token necessity
integralOrchestrators need staked LPT to be selected for work and LPT governs upgrades, but customers pay in ETH and never need to hold LPT.
Decentralization
moderateIndependent orchestrators do the work and stakers vote on changes, but the active orchestrator set is limited in size and core development relies on the Livepeer Foundation and Livepeer Inc.
Track record
longThe protocol has run since 2018 and completed a major migration to Arbitrum in 2022 without a widely reported loss of funds.

How we rate

What it’s used for

Apps send video transcoding and AI inference jobs through gateways to operators called orchestrators, who do the work and earn fees in ETH. LPT holders who do not run hardware can delegate their tokens to an orchestrator and share in its fees and newly issued LPT. AI jobs, such as the real-time video tools built by Daydream, now generate most of the network's fee revenue.

Evidence of real use

  • Messari's Q1 2026 report found Livepeer processed 134.4 million minutes, up 71.9% quarter over quarter, with demand-side fees reaching a record $257,300. Source
  • AI-driven fees were $154,700 in Q1 2026, roughly 60% of protocol revenue. Source
  • Livepeer's protocol contracts moved to Arbitrum One with the Confluence upgrade in February 2022. Source

What actually happens
Orchestrators on Livepeer run AI models on video, including real-time transformation of live streams, and are paid fees in ETH for each job. LPT does not run the models; it is staked to route work to orchestrators and to govern the protocol. AI jobs are measurable and became the majority of fees in early 2026, though volumes are still modest.

AI crypto, explained

How Livepeer works

Livepeer splits video work across a network of orchestrators, operators who run GPUs and bid to process jobs. An application sends a stream or an AI request to a gateway, which routes it to an orchestrator based on price, performance and stake. The orchestrator transcodes the video into the formats and resolutions viewers need, or runs an AI model on each frame, and is paid in ETH through a probabilistic micropayment system that keeps on-chain costs low.

LPT is the coordination and security token. Orchestrators must have LPT staked, or bonded, to them to join the active set, and more stake means more work. Token holders can delegate LPT to an orchestrator and receive a share of its ETH fees and new LPT issuance. The protocol adjusts issuance up or down depending on whether at least half of all LPT is staked, which encourages participation. Protocol contracts run on Arbitrum, an Ethereum layer 2.

Since 2024, Livepeer has added AI inference to the same network. Orchestrators with suitable GPUs can serve jobs such as text-to-image, image-to-video and real-time transformation of live video, which apps like Daydream use for interactive effects and AI avatars. Operators can also bring their own containers to run custom AI pipelines. By early 2026, AI jobs had become the network's largest source of fees, and the Livepeer Foundation expects traditional transcoding fees to shrink over time.

Key moments

  1. 2017Doug Petkanics and Eric Tang found Livepeer.
  2. 2018The Livepeer protocol launches on Ethereum mainnet with LPT.
  3. 2022The Confluence upgrade moves the protocol to Arbitrum in February.
  4. 2024Livepeer announces an AI subnet in May and opens it to AI inference jobs later that year.
  5. 2026Q1 sets records for minutes processed and fees, with AI accounting for about 60% of fees.

Supply

LPT has no hard cap. New LPT is issued every round to orchestrators and delegators, and the rate falls when more than 50% of supply is staked and rises when less is staked. If you hold LPT without staking it, your share of the supply shrinks over time.

Risks to understand

  • Ongoing issuance dilutes holders who do not stake or delegate.
  • Fee revenue is real but small relative to the network's valuation, and transcoding fees are expected to decline as the focus shifts to AI.
  • Delegators can lose rewards if they choose a poorly performing orchestrator, and must wait through an unbonding period to withdraw.
  • Real-time AI video is a young market with strong competition from centralized GPU clouds.

Livepeer FAQ

Do customers pay in LPT?

No. Video and AI jobs are paid for in ETH. LPT is staked by orchestrators and delegators to secure the network and earn a share of those fees.

What is an orchestrator?

An orchestrator is an operator running GPUs who processes transcoding and AI jobs on the network. Orchestrators need LPT staked to them to be selected for work.

Why is Livepeer considered an AI project?

Since 2024 its GPU operators also run AI inference on video, and by Q1 2026 those AI jobs produced about 60% of the network's fees.
