Read this first — caution flag. As of October 2026 the network is being restructured: the validator set is shrinking to 30, its DEX has closed, emissions are being rewritten, and DAG's new AI role depends on an inference network that has not launched. How to evaluate a project.

What is Constellation?

Constellation is a network built to record and verify data rather than run general smart contracts. Its base layer, the Hypergraph, finalizes snapshots from application-specific subnetworks called metagraphs. DAG is the native token, used for feeless transfers, validator staking and metagraph fees, and since 2026 the company behind it has been owned by Nasdaq-listed AIAI Holdings.

Utility Lens

What Constellation actually does

Gives organizations a way to sign data when it is created and anchor proof of it to a public ledger, so others can later check it was not altered.

Real-world usage
earlyGovernment pilots, data products and a few metagraphs exist, but independent usage data is scarce and the team says mainnet traffic does not justify its current size.
Token necessity
integralValidators must stake DAG and metagraphs pay snapshot fees in DAG, but ordinary transfers are free and enterprise data products can be sold as services without customers holding DAG.
Decentralization
limitedValidators have needed a spot on an allowlist, the active set is being cut to 30, and emission rules are set by the company together with the Stardust Collective.
Track record
provenThe Hypergraph mainnet has run since May 2020; investors sued in 2021 over the token swap, a case dismissed in July 2023 after the parties reported a settlement, and the PacaSwap exchange was closed in 2026 after a September 9 exploit; the company says it restored the funds taken.

How we rate

What it’s used for

DAG holders send tokens without fees through wallets such as Stargazer and delegate DAG to validator nodes for rewards. Constellation sells Digital Evidence, a service for tamper-evident data, and Gate AI, an audit and security product for AI apps, to enterprise and government buyers. A handful of data metagraphs anchor activity to the Hypergraph. Public, independently measured usage is limited, and the company itself said in 2026 that mainnet traffic was small.

ISO 20022: claim vs. reality

What’s documented
We found no Constellation documentation describing ISO 20022 message products, bank-payment integrations or membership in an ISO 20022 standards body. Its documented focus is data integrity, government data-sharing research and AI audit tools, not interbank payments.
What you’ll hear online
DAG is often listed on social media as one of the 'ISO 20022 compliant coins' alongside XRP, XLM, XDC, HBAR and ALGO.
Reality check
ISO 20022 is a bank messaging standard; it does not certify or endorse any cryptocurrency. Appearing on an online 'ISO 20022 coin' list says nothing about whether banks use a network, and we found no evidence that they use Constellation for payments.

The AI angle

AI role
inference network
What actually happens
In September 2026 Constellation said it would run an inference network as a metagraph: people with a capable GPU or Apple Silicon computer serve open AI models, its Gate AI platform sends customer requests to them, and operators are paid in DAG. As of October 2026 this was at the beta sign-up stage, so there is no usage record yet. Gate AI itself, launched in July 2026, focuses on audit trails and security for AI apps rather than running models.

How Constellation works

Most blockchains line transactions up one block at a time. Constellation instead uses a directed acyclic graph, or DAG, where many transactions can be confirmed in parallel and then combined. At the bottom, a layer handles DAG token transfers, which carry no user fee. Those results go up to the Global Layer 0, called the Hypergraph, which bundles everything into 'global snapshots' that act as the official record. The software that implements this is called Tessellation.

On top of the Hypergraph sit metagraphs: separate subnetworks built for one application, each with its own rules, data format and optional token. A metagraph runs its own clusters of at least three nodes to check incoming data, packages the results into snapshots, and submits them to the Hypergraph, paying fees in DAG. One example is the Dor metagraph, which collects readings from Dor's retail foot-traffic sensors. In 2026 Constellation began switching off metagraphs that had stopped producing snapshots.

Constellation's business pitch is provable data. Its Digital Evidence product signs data such as sensor readings or files when it is captured and anchors proof of it to the Hypergraph, an approach the company says grew out of six years of work with the US Department of Defense, including Air Force research contracts. In 2026 the company was acquired by AIAI Holdings and said it would focus the network on AI. It launched Gate AI, which records what AI tools do, and announced an inference network that would pay people with capable computers in DAG to run open AI models. That network was still in beta sign-up as of October 2026.

Key moments

  1. 2018Constellation launches DAG as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum.
  2. 2020The Hypergraph mainnet goes live in May after ERC-20 DAG is swapped for native DAG.
  3. 2021A US Air Force SBIR contract for secure data sharing is announced, and investors file a class action over the token swap.
  4. 2023Metagraphs launch on mainnet, and Constellation says it completed its Air Force Phase II contract.
  5. 2024Constellation announces its 'Metanomics' model, unlocking 450 million founder tokens and replacing DAG's fixed 3.69 billion cap with a flexible, inflationary supply from early 2025.
  6. 2026AIAI Holdings acquires Constellation and lists on Nasdaq; the network refocuses on AI, closes PacaSwap and cuts to 30 active validators.

Supply

DAG once had a fixed cap of 3.69 billion, but the Metanomics model, announced in 2024, replaced it with a flexible supply from early 2025: new DAG is issued to validators and delegators at an inflation rate that starts near 6% a year and steps down toward 0.5%, while snapshot fees paid by metagraphs are consumed. The change also unlocked 450 million founder tokens for the treasury, and total supply has since grown past the old cap. In September 2026 the team said it would ratify a new, lower emission schedule with the Stardust Collective.

Risks to understand

  • Strategy shifts: the network has moved from DeFi to an AI focus, closed its own exchange, and now rests much of DAG's future role on an inference network that is not yet live.
  • Concentrated control: a 30-validator set, allowlisted nodes and emission rules set by the company and the Stardust Collective leave a small group in charge.
  • Changing supply rules: DAG has dropped its fixed cap and its emission schedule is being rewritten again, so dilution is hard to predict.
  • Company versus token: Constellation is now a subsidiary of a public company, so shareholders' interests and DAG holders' interests may not always line up, and owning DAG is not owning AIAI stock.
  • Government claims need context: the US Air Force work came through SBIR research contracts, mostly described in the company's own press releases, not a large production deployment.

Constellation FAQ

Is Constellation a blockchain?

Yes, but it is built as a directed acyclic graph (DAG) with a top layer called the Hypergraph instead of a single chain of blocks, and it focuses on verifying data rather than running general smart contracts.

Does Constellation really work with the US military?

Constellation has announced US Air Force SBIR research contracts since 2019 and says it completed a Phase II contract in 2023. These are research-stage awards, and most details come from the company's own releases.

Is DAG the same as AIAI stock?

No. AIAI Holdings owns Constellation Network Inc. and trades on Nasdaq, while DAG is the network's token, so owning one gives you no rights in the other.

Does DAG have a maximum supply?

Not anymore. The original 3.69 billion cap was replaced in early 2025 by a flexible supply with ongoing issuance, and the emission schedule was being revised again in late 2026.
