What is OriginTrail?

OriginTrail is an open network of nodes that stores structured, tamper-evident knowledge, from supply-chain records to facts that AI agents can look up and cite. TRAC is a fixed-supply token used to pay for publishing knowledge to the network and to stake on the nodes that keep it available.

Utility Lens

What OriginTrail actually does

Gives companies and AI agents a shared place to publish data with a verifiable record of who wrote it and when, so others can query and trust it.

Real-world usage
earlyThere are real enterprise deployments and a large count of published assets, but independent data on paid publishing volume and outside demand is thin.
Token necessity
integralTRAC pays nodes for publishing and acts as node collateral, but the free memory tiers in V10 mean many agent workflows never touch it.
Decentralization
moderateAnyone can run or delegate to a node, but the protocol is developed and steered mainly by Trace Labs, its core developer.
Track record
longTRAC has existed since early 2018, and the network has gone through several major rewrites (including V8 and V10) without a widely reported loss of funds.

How we rate

What it’s used for

Organizations publish records as Knowledge Assets, units of graph data that are anchored on a blockchain and minted as NFTs so ownership and revisions are traceable. OriginTrail lists production deployments in supply chains, healthcare and internet-safety tools. Its V10 release targets AI agents, letting them keep private or shared memory for free and pay in TRAC only when they publish facts to the permanent, verifiable layer.

Evidence of real use

  • OriginTrail states that TRAC launched in 2018 as an ERC-20 token with a fixed supply of 500 million, all of which is in circulation. Source
  • In V10, working and shared memory are free, and TRAC is required only to publish to Verifiable Memory and to stake for network security. Source
  • In 2026 OriginTrail reported that the Decentralized Knowledge Graph was tracking more than 2 billion Knowledge Assets. Source

The AI angle

AI role
data/labeling
What actually happens
OriginTrail does not train or run AI models. It stores structured knowledge with a verifiable trail that AI agents and apps can query and cite, which can help reduce made-up answers when agents rely on it. TRAC pays nodes to keep published knowledge available and is staked as collateral; how much paid agent publishing actually happens is still unclear.

AI crypto, explained

How OriginTrail works

The Decentralized Knowledge Graph (DKG) is a peer-to-peer network of nodes that store data as linked graph statements built on W3C semantic web standards. When someone publishes a fact or record, it becomes a Knowledge Asset with a stable identifier called a UAL. A fingerprint of the content is anchored on a supported blockchain and the asset is minted as an ERC-721 token, so anyone can later check that the data has not been altered and see who owns it.

Publishers pay TRAC to have their Knowledge Assets replicated and kept available for a chosen period. Node operators lock TRAC as collateral, and nodes with more stake have a better chance of being picked to host data and earn those fees. Holders who do not run a node can delegate TRAC to an operator and share in its rewards. V10 adds Conviction features that discount publishing for publishers who commit TRAC up front and boost rewards for stakers who lock longer.

V10 reorganizes the network around AI agents. Working Memory stays private on a user's own node, Shared Working Memory syncs only with chosen peers, and Verifiable Memory is the public, blockchain-anchored layer. The node software plugs into agent tools through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), a command line and an HTTP API, so an agent can draft notes privately and publish only the conclusions worth keeping on-chain.

Key moments

  1. 2018TRAC launches as an ERC-20 token after a token sale in January.
  2. 2025DKG V8 goes live, adding Edge Nodes and large-scale batch publishing of Knowledge Assets.
  3. 2026OriginTrail reports more than 2 billion Knowledge Assets on the DKG and releases V10, which reframes the network as a memory layer for AI agents.

Supply

TRAC has a fixed supply of 500 million tokens, and the project says all of them are already in circulation, so there are no scheduled unlocks or new issuance. Node rewards come from publishing fees paid by users rather than from inflation.

Risks to understand

  • Publishing demand that pays nodes in TRAC is hard to verify independently, so the token's link to real usage is uncertain.
  • Free memory tiers in V10 may attract users without creating much demand for TRAC.
  • The project depends heavily on Trace Labs for development and business deals.
  • It competes with centralized databases and with many other projects pitching data infrastructure for AI agents.

OriginTrail FAQ

Is OriginTrail an AI company?

Not in the sense of building models. It provides data infrastructure, a shared knowledge graph that AI agents and other software can read from and write to.

What is a Knowledge Asset?

It is a published bundle of graph data with a permanent identifier, an on-chain fingerprint and an NFT that records ownership. That lets others confirm who published it and that it has not been changed.

Will more TRAC ever be created?

No. The supply is fixed at 500 million, and the project says all of it is already circulating.
