What is Algorand?

Algorand is a proof-of-stake blockchain designed by MIT professor and Turing Award winner Silvio Micali, launched in 2019. ALGO pays fees and secures the network, and the chain is used for payments, stablecoins and tokenized assets, with blocks finalized in a few seconds.

Utility Lens

What Algorand actually does

Provides fast, final, low-fee transactions and smart contracts for payments, tokens and financial apps.

Real-world usage
earlyLive payment and tokenization apps exist, but on-chain activity and value locked remain modest compared with larger networks.
Token necessity
essentialALGO pays every fee and is the stake that selects block proposers and voting committees.
Decentralization
moderateAnyone can participate in consensus with their ALGO, but the Algorand Foundation and early insiders have held large stakes and steer much of development.
Track record
provenMainnet since 2019 with no reported protocol-level hack; a 2023 theft hit users of a third-party web wallet (MyAlgo), not the protocol itself.

How we rate

What it’s used for

Developers build wallets, payment apps and tokenized-asset projects on Algorand, and holders can bring their ALGO online to take part in consensus and earn rewards. Humanitarian payment app HesabPay, which runs on Algorand, reports supporting hundreds of thousands of returnees in Afghanistan. Activity is real but smaller than on the largest smart-contract chains.

Evidence of real use

  • Algorand introduced protocol-level staking rewards for online participants in January 2025. Source
  • The Algorand Foundation reports that HesabPay, built on Algorand, supported over 600,000 refugee returnees in Afghanistan. Source
  • The Algorand Foundation named William Herkelrath CEO in September 2026, focusing on institutional finance and post-quantum security. Source

ISO 20022: claim vs. reality

What’s documented
We could not find any documented ISO 20022 role for Algorand: neither Algorand nor the Algorand Foundation appears on the ISO 20022 Registration Management Group roster, and we found no official Algorand announcement of an ISO 20022 product, certification or bank messaging pilot.
What you’ll hear online
Algorand is one of the 'ISO 20022 compliant' coins that will be used by banks under the new standard.
Reality check
ISO 20022 is a bank messaging standard; it does not certify, approve or list any cryptocurrency. Algorand's presence on online 'ISO 20022 coin' lists comes from third parties, not from the standard's governing bodies or the Algorand Foundation.

ISO 20022, explained

How Algorand works

Algorand uses 'pure proof of stake.' For each block, the protocol secretly and randomly selects a proposer and a voting committee, weighted by how much ALGO each participant has online. Because selection is private until a participant acts, it is hard for an attacker to know whom to target. Blocks are final as soon as they are added, so there are no forks to wait out.

Since 2025, accounts that run a node or use a staking service and keep enough ALGO online can earn protocol rewards for proposing blocks. There is no lockup: your ALGO stays in your own account. Accounts that keep at least the minimum required stake online and run reliably are eligible, and anyone below that can still join through pooled services. Rewards come from fees and a foundation-funded pool rather than open-ended inflation.

Developers write smart contracts in languages such as Python and TypeScript that compile to the Algorand Virtual Machine. The chain also has native features for issuing tokens and grouping several transactions so they all succeed or all fail together. Algorand also uses state proofs, a compact cryptographic summary of the chain that other systems can check, and its foundation published a roadmap in 2026 aimed at resisting attacks from future quantum computers.

Key moments

  1. 2017Silvio Micali founds Algorand.
  2. 2019Mainnet launches and ALGO begins trading.
  3. 2025Protocol staking rewards go live for online participants.
  4. 2026The Foundation publishes a post-quantum security roadmap and appoints a new CEO.

Supply

ALGO has a hard cap of 10 billion tokens, all created at launch and released over time from foundation and ecosystem allocations. Staking rewards are paid from fees and a foundation-funded rewards pool rather than open-ended inflation.

Risks to understand

  • Adoption risk: strong technology has not yet translated into the kind of usage seen on the largest chains.
  • Foundation influence: development funding and much strategy flow through the Algorand Foundation.
  • Unlocks of foundation and ecosystem holdings can add supply to the market.
  • Competition for payments and tokenization business from many faster-growing networks.

Algorand FAQ

How do I earn ALGO staking rewards?

Your ALGO needs to be online in consensus, either by running a participation node or using a staking service, and you must meet the protocol's minimum balance to be eligible.

Is Algorand's supply capped?

Yes. There will never be more than 10 billion ALGO.

Is Algorand ISO 20022 certified?

No. There is no ISO 20022 certification for any cryptocurrency, and we found no official Algorand ISO 20022 role.
