What is Worldcoin?
Worldcoin (WLD) is the token of World, a project co-founded by Sam Altman and Alex Blania and built by Tools for Humanity. People scan their irises with a device called the Orb to get a World ID, an anonymous credential that proves they are a unique human online. WLD is handed out to verified users and trades on exchanges, but World ID itself does not require holding it.

What Worldcoin actually does
Gives people a privacy-preserving way to prove they are a real, unique human, with WLD used as an incentive and ecosystem token.
- Real-world usage
- growingMillions of people have verified and large consumer apps are adopting World ID, though the WLD token itself is mostly traded rather than spent.
- Token necessity
- optionalWorld ID works without holding WLD; the token mainly serves as a sign-up incentive and ecosystem asset.
- Decentralization
- limitedTools for Humanity designs and deploys the Orbs and the World Foundation controls the protocol and a large share of token supply.
- Track record
- developingWLD launched in July 2023, and the project has faced data-protection orders, suspensions or court rulings in several countries since.
What it’s used for
People visit an Orb, verify once, and then use World ID in the World App or partner services to prove they are human without sharing their name. Verified users in eligible regions can claim WLD grants. In April 2026 Tinder, Zoom and Docusign announced they would use World ID to fight bots, deepfakes and fraud.
Role of the WLD token:
Evidence of real use
- About 18 million people have verified at an Orb, according to World. Source
- World launched in the US on April 30, 2025, starting with Orb locations in Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville and San Francisco. Source
- Kenya's High Court ruled in May 2025 that Worldcoin's biometric collection there was unlawful and ordered the data deleted. Source
- Tinder, Zoom and Docusign announced World ID partnerships in April 2026. Source
The AI angle
- AI role
- AI-themed (no direct AI function)
- What actually happens
- World does not train or run AI models for users; its purpose is the reverse, giving people a way to prove they are human as AI bots and deepfakes become harder to spot. World ID verifications are real usage, but the WLD token plays no direct part in any AI computation. Its AI link is a response to AI, not an AI service.
How Worldcoin works
To get a World ID, you download World App and visit an Orb, a camera device that photographs your iris and face to check you are a live, unique person. World says the images are used to create an encrypted code, stored on your phone under a model it calls personal custody, and that matching against other users runs through anonymized multi-party computation so no single party holds the full template.
Once verified, you can prove you are human to an app with a zero-knowledge proof, which confirms you hold a valid World ID without revealing which one. This is aimed at a world where AI bots can convincingly imitate people online. Apps that integrate World ID can limit sign-ups, votes or ticket purchases to one per real person. Developers do not learn who you are, only that you have not already used the same app with another account.
WLD is an Ethereum-based token also used on World Chain, the project's own Ethereum layer 2 network launched in 2024. Verified users in eligible places can claim WLD grants in the app. Eligibility depends on where you live: the project says WLD is not distributed through World App to residents of New York State and other restricted territories, even though Americans elsewhere can verify and claim.
Key moments
- 2021Sam Altman and Alex Blania announce Worldcoin and unveil the Orb.
- 2023WLD and World ID launch globally in July; Kenya suspends Orb sign-ups weeks later.
- 2024Spain, Portugal and Hong Kong order data collection halted; Germany's regulator orders some data deleted; the project rebrands as World.
- 2025World launches in six US cities; Brazil, Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand restrict operations and a Kenyan court orders data deletion.
- 2026Tinder, Zoom and Docusign announce World ID integrations.
Supply
WLD's supply is set at 10 billion tokens for the first 15 years after its July 2023 launch, after which the design allows for possible inflation. At launch, 75% was allocated to the World community and 25% to Tools for Humanity's team, investors and a reserve, released on unlock schedules. Ongoing unlocks add to circulating supply.
Risks to understand
- Biometric collection has been suspended, banned or ruled unlawful in several countries, and more regulators may act.
- Iris data is permanent; if privacy protections fail, you cannot change your iris like a password.
- WLD is optional for using World ID, so token demand does not automatically follow identity adoption.
- Ongoing unlocks of insider and investor tokens add supply pressure.
- Fake World apps, Orb operators and airdrop sites target new users.
Worldcoin FAQ
Is Worldcoin available in the US?
Yes, as of October 2026 Americans can verify at Orbs in a growing number of cities and WLD trades on major US exchanges. WLD is not distributed through World App to New York State residents.
Do I need WLD to use World ID?
No. World ID works on its own; WLD is an optional token that verified users in eligible regions can claim.
Why have some countries banned Worldcoin?
Regulators in places such as Kenya, Spain, Portugal, Hong Kong, Brazil, Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand raised concerns about consent, minors and paying people for biometric data.
What is the Orb?
The Orb is a camera device that scans your iris and face to confirm you are a unique, living person before issuing a World ID.
