What is Telcoin?

Telcoin is a US fintech group that runs the Telcoin Wallet for sending money abroad and Telcoin Digital Asset Bank, a Nebraska-chartered bank that issues the eUSD stablecoin. TEL is the platform's governance and incentive token and is designed to become the gas token of Telcoin Network, a blockchain run by mobile carriers that had not launched its mainnet as of October 2026.

Utility Lens

What Telcoin actually does

Aims to make cross-border transfers and dollar accounts cheap on a phone, using a regulated bank, a stablecoin and mobile-money partners.

Real-world usage
earlyThe wallet, remittance corridors and bank accounts are live, but eUSD issuance has been small, Telcoin Network has no mainnet yet, and independent volume data is limited.
Token necessity
optionalYou can send remittances, open a bank account and hold eUSD without touching TEL; TEL only becomes required gas once Telcoin Network launches.
Decentralization
limitedOnly GSMA mobile network operators may run Telcoin Network validators, and the new TEL contract has admin roles, run through a 7-of-9 multisig, that can pause transfers and burn tokens in emergencies.
Track record
longTEL has existed since a December 2017 token sale; in December 2023 a wallet bug on Polygon was exploited for about $1.2 million, and Telcoin later restored affected balances.

How we rate

What it’s used for

People in the US and Canada use the Telcoin Wallet to send money to mobile-money accounts such as GCash and Maya in more than 20 countries. Since June 2026, US residents can open a Telcoin Digital Asset Bank account in the wallet and hold eUSD. TEL holders can stake it in the Telcoin Wallet or supply liquidity through the TELx program, and those who do gain a vote in Telcoin Association governance through their Miner Group. TEL's planned gas and validator-staking roles only start once Telcoin Network mainnet launches.

How Telcoin works

Telcoin has two main sides. The company, based in Norfolk, Nebraska, runs the Telcoin Wallet and the bank. The Telcoin Association, a non-profit Swiss association launched in 2023, governs what it calls the Telcoin Platform: the TEL token, Telcoin Network, the TELx liquidity program and an app network for mobile operators. Proposals are debated in the Association's forum and decided by Miner Councils, whose members are elected by four Miner Groups (stakers, developers, liquidity miners and validators); changes to the governance system itself need all four groups to approve them as the Miner Assembly. This split matters because owning TEL is not the same as owning part of the company or the bank.

Telcoin Digital Asset Bank holds a special-purpose charter under Nebraska's Financial Innovation Act of 2021. It issues eUSD, a US-dollar stablecoin. Nebraska's banking director said the reserves backing such stablecoins are mostly US government bonds or deposits at FDIC-insured Nebraska banks. Customers deposit dollars by bank transfer and receive eUSD in the wallet. eUSD and TEL are separate assets: holding TEL gives you no claim on the bank's reserves, and eUSD's value does not depend on TEL.

Telcoin Network is an Ethereum-compatible proof-of-stake blockchain whose validators can only be mobile network operators that are GSMA members. TEL is meant to pay its gas fees. A testnet has run since 2023, and the mainnet, once expected in early 2026, was still pending in October 2026. To prepare, holders began upgrading from the old 2-decimal TEL to a new 18-decimal TEL on September 24, 2026. The new contract uses the same address on Ethereum, Polygon and Base, and CoinGecko now lists the old token as 'Telcoin [OLD]'.

Key moments

  1. 2017Telcoin is founded and sells TEL in a December token sale; total supply is fixed at 100 billion.
  2. 2021Nebraska passes the Financial Innovation Act, and Telcoin opens its first remittance corridor, from Canada to the Philippines.
  3. 2023The Telcoin Association and the Telcoin Network testnet launch, Telcoin applies for a Nebraska charter, and a wallet exploit hits Polygon users in December.
  4. 2025Nebraska grants the Telcoin Digital Asset Bank charter in November, and eUSD launches in December.
  5. 2026Bank accounts linked to eUSD open in June, and the 1:1 upgrade to the new TEL contract starts on September 24.

Supply

TEL's total supply has been fixed at 100 billion since 2017, and the new contract enforces the same 100 billion hard cap, minting new TEL only as old TEL is upgraded. The Association releases TEL from its treasury each year to fund development and incentives; a 2026 proposal sought 900 million TEL for that year. The upgrade to the new contract opened on September 24, 2026. For the first 12 months every holder can swap old TEL for new TEL 1:1; from month 12 to month 24, late swaps continue first come, first served only while a limited reserve lasts (the Compliance Council sets the final rules for this period), and once month 24 passes, upgrades are no longer supported and any unused reserve goes to the TEL Treasury.

Risks to understand

  • Upgrade risk: fake upgrade sites target holders, many exchanges were still listed as 'In Discussion' about supporting new TEL as of October 2026, and trading in old TEL is expected to thin out.
  • Delivery risk: TEL's main planned job, paying gas on Telcoin Network, depends on a mainnet that has slipped past its early-2026 target.
  • Token versus bank: the bank and eUSD can succeed without creating demand for TEL, and TEL holders have no claim on the bank.
  • Concentrated control: the validator set is limited to mobile operators, and the new token and its LayerZero bridges have admin and mint authority held by a multisig. Bridges have been a common source of large crypto losses.
  • Regulatory novelty: Telcoin's bank is the first of its kind, and how state charters fit with federal stablecoin rules under the GENIUS Act is still being worked out.

Telcoin FAQ

Why does CoinGecko show two Telcoin tokens?

In September 2026 Telcoin began a 1:1 upgrade from the old 2-decimal TEL to a new 18-decimal TEL, so the old token is now tracked separately as 'Telcoin [OLD]'.

Is eUSD the same as TEL?

No. eUSD is a dollar stablecoin issued by Telcoin Digital Asset Bank, while TEL is the Telcoin Platform's governance and network token, and its price moves freely.

Is Telcoin Network live?

Not yet. As of October 2026 Telcoin Network was still in testnet, and the TEL upgrade was described as a step toward its mainnet launch.

Do I need TEL to send money with the Telcoin Wallet?

No. Remittances can be funded from a digital asset balance or a connected bank account, and holding TEL is not required.
