What is Sentient?

Sentient is an open-source AI effort run by the nonprofit Sentient Foundation alongside Sentient Labs. Its GRID is a shared directory of AI agents, models and data sources, and Sentient Chat is one app built on top of it. The SENT token, launched in January 2026, is meant for staking, governance and paying for services across that ecosystem.

Utility Lens

What Sentient actually does

Coordinates and funds an open network of AI agents, models and data tools, with SENT used for staking, voting and service payments.

Real-world usage
earlyThe chat app and open-source tools have real users, but paid demand for services priced in SENT is not yet documented.
Token necessity
optionalSentient Chat and the open-source releases can be used without holding SENT; the token mainly adds staking, voting and an in-ecosystem payment option.
Decentralization
limitedThe foundation controls large ecosystem and community allocations and runs the main products, and team and investors hold over a third of supply.
Track record
newThe project raised its seed round in 2024 and the SENT token only began trading in January 2026; no major hacks have been reported.

How we rate

What it’s used for

Most visible use today is Sentient Chat, which the foundation says drew more than 290,000 unique users during its closed beta, plus open-source releases such as the ROMA agent framework. The foundation says SENT holders can stake to vote and unlock access, and that apps on the GRID can charge in SENT. So far SENT has reached users mainly through airdrops and community reward programs; the foundation has not published figures on paid service fees.

The AI angle

AI role
model marketplace
What actually happens
Sentient's GRID lists AI agents, models and data services that can be discovered and combined, and SENT is meant to pay for and reward those services. The AI products are real and open source, but SENT has so far been handed out mainly through incentive programs, and no figures on customers paying for AI work have been published.

AI crypto, explained

How Sentient works

Sentient's central idea is the GRID, an open registry where agents, language models, data providers and other AI tools are listed so they can be found and combined. A user question might be routed through a search agent, a summarizer and a specialist database rather than one model. Sentient Chat is one front end to this registry. The team also publishes research and code, including the ROMA framework for coordinating groups of agents and the Dobby language model.

SENT sits on top of this as a coordination token. According to the foundation, staking SENT gives voting power in the Sentient DAO over emissions, treasury spending and upgrades, and can unlock access to certain models and tools. Builders who list services on the GRID can be paid in SENT, and services can pay one another. The whitepaper describes rewards for contributors being funded from emission formulas, with usage records kept on-chain or in auditable indexes.

In practice, the token's economics are still at an early stage. The largest share of supply is earmarked for community programs, airdrops and ecosystem grants, so the SENT reaching users so far has come mainly through airdrops and reward programs, and paid demand for AI services priced in SENT is not yet documented. Separately, the foundation announced a $42 million grant and investment program in June 2026 for open-source AI teams. Whether paid usage grows enough to matter next to these incentive flows is the key open question.

Key moments

  1. 2024Sentient raises an $85 million seed round co-led by Founders Fund, Pantera Capital and Framework Ventures.
  2. 2025The foundation opens airdrop registration in November for chat users, community members and outside researchers.
  3. 2026SENT starts trading in January, with Binance listing it on January 22 under its Seed Tag.
  4. 2026In June the Sentient Foundation announces a $42 million open-source AGI grant and investment program.

Supply

SENT has a fixed starting supply of 34,359,738,368 tokens, a number chosen because it equals 2 to the 35th power. About 65.55% is set aside for community, ecosystem and public-sale buckets, 22% for the team (one-year cliff, then six years of vesting) and 12.45% for investors (one-year cliff, then four years). A further 2% per year is directed into a community emission pool, and any unspent part of each year's amount is locked.

Risks to understand

  • Team and investor tokens begin unlocking after a one-year cliff from launch, adding supply over several years.
  • Most token distribution comes from airdrops and reward pools; paid demand for SENT-priced services is unproven.
  • Open-source AI products compete with well-funded closed labs and free alternatives, and users do not need SENT to use them.
  • Binance flagged SENT with its Seed Tag, which it applies to early-stage, higher-risk projects.

Sentient FAQ

Do I need SENT to use Sentient Chat?

No. The chat app and the open-source research releases work without holding the token. SENT is mainly for staking, governance and paying for services within the ecosystem.

Who runs Sentient?

The Sentient Foundation, a nonprofit, works alongside Sentient Labs. CoinDesk reported that Sandeep Nailwal, who co-founded Polygon, is among its core contributors.

Is SENT inflationary?

Yes, modestly. The foundation sets aside 2% of supply per year for community rewards and locks whatever goes unspent at year end.
