What is Nym?
Nym is a privacy network that protects the metadata of internet traffic, such as who is talking to whom and when, rather than hiding blockchain balances. Its main product, NymVPN, sends traffic through a mixnet of independent servers that shuffle packets and add fake cover traffic. The NYM token rewards the people who run those servers and is used behind the scenes for anonymous VPN access credentials.
Utility Lens
What Nym actually does
Hides who is communicating with whom online, including IP addresses and traffic patterns, by routing data through a decentralized mixnet.
- Real-world usage
- earlyNymVPN is a live, regularly updated commercial product, but it launched only in 2025 and the project does not publish independent usage figures we could verify.
- Token necessity
- integralNYM rewards and secures node operators and backs VPN access credentials, though users can pay for the VPN in ordinary currency.
- Decentralization
- moderateMix nodes and gateways are run by independent operators who bond NYM, but the validators securing the Nyx chain are whitelisted and the token was issued by Nym Technologies SA.
- Track record
- provenThe NYM token went live on mainnet in early 2022, and the network has run since then with frequent software releases; we found no record of a major hack.
What it’s used for
Most people meet Nym through NymVPN, a paid app with an anonymous mixnet mode and a faster two-hop mode, aimed at people who want to avoid tracking or censorship. Node operators bond NYM and others delegate stake to them to earn rewards. Developers can also route their own apps' traffic through the mixnet.

Privacy: what’s hidden, what isn’t
- Privacy model
- network-level
- What it hides
- Your IP address from the sites you visit, and in anonymous mode the timing and pattern of your traffic, which makes it hard to link who is talking to whom.
- What stays visible
- The entry gateway sees your IP address, your internet provider can see that you are connecting to Nym, and in fast mode traffic is not mixed. Transactions of the NYM token itself are recorded on its blockchain.
- Reality check
- Mixnets are designed to resist observers who can watch the whole network, but extra delay and cover traffic cost speed, and privacy still depends on users not identifying themselves. Nym says it has a registered token prospectus in Switzerland; it is a network-privacy tool rather than an anonymity-enhancing coin.
How Nym works
A mixnet hides traffic patterns, not just content. When you use NymVPN's anonymous mode, your data is split into identically sized, layered-encrypted packets and passed through a chain of independent servers. The company says this route covers five servers. Mix nodes hold packets for tiny random delays and reorder them, and devices send fake cover traffic, so an observer watching the whole network has a much harder time matching what goes in with what comes out.
NymVPN also has a fast mode that uses two hops and AmneziaWG, a fork of the WireGuard VPN protocol. It is quicker and aims to resist censorship tools, but it does not mix traffic the way anonymous mode does. To keep payments separate from usage, Nym issues zero-knowledge access credentials, called zk-nyms, so the network can confirm you paid without learning who you are.
The network runs alongside Nyx, a Cosmos-based blockchain that records NYM balances and runs the smart contracts that pay node operators. Mix nodes earn from a mix-mining reward pool based on the work they do and the stake bonded or delegated to them, while gateways also receive a share of user fees. Anyone can delegate NYM to a node to share in its rewards.
Key moments
- 2022The NYM token goes live on mainnet in January, followed by a public token sale on CoinList in February.
- 2025Nym launches NymVPN for general availability in London on March 13.
- 2026NymVPN v2026.12 ships in September with one-click connections and split tunneling.
Supply
Nym's token page lists a fixed supply of 1 billion NYM and says no new tokens are being minted. Node rewards come from a mix-mining pool that makes up 25% of the supply, and the company says it buys back NYM using VPN subscription revenue.
Risks to understand
- Network-level privacy protects metadata, not identity you reveal yourself; logging into personal accounts over the VPN still identifies you to those services.
- Fast mode trades the mixnet's protections for speed, so users need to pick the right mode for their threat model.
- Validators on the Nyx chain are whitelisted and the token issuer is a single company, which concentrates influence.
- Token demand is tied to how many people pay for NymVPN in a crowded VPN market.
- NYM is not on the major US exchanges we checked.
Nym FAQ
Is Nym a privacy coin?
Not in the usual sense. NYM pays for and secures a privacy network for internet traffic; it does not hide balances the way Monero or Zcash do.
How is NymVPN different from a regular VPN?
A regular VPN routes your traffic through one company's server, which can see where it comes from and where it goes. Nym's anonymous mode spreads that across several independent nodes and adds cover traffic so no single operator sees the full route.
Do I need NYM to use NymVPN?
No. You can subscribe with ordinary currency; Nym says payments are converted to NYM behind the scenes.
