What is Morpho?

Morpho is a decentralized lending network. Instead of one big shared pool, it uses many small, isolated lending markets plus vaults run by outside risk managers called curators. MORPHO is the governance token; as of October 2026 its protocol fee switch had not been turned on, so the token does not capture fees.

Utility Lens

What Morpho actually does

Provides simple, isolated lending markets and curated vaults that apps and institutions use to offer crypto loans and yield.

Real-world usage
growingDeposits and integrations with exchanges, fintechs and banks have grown quickly since the isolated-market design launched in 2024.
Token necessity
optionalLending and borrowing work without MORPHO; the token's main role is voting, and the fee switch was off as of October 2026.
Decentralization
moderateMarkets are immutable once created and permissionless, but vault safety depends on individual curators and governance is concentrated among the association, early backers and large holders.
Track record
developingThe current Morpho design launched in January 2024; core contracts have not been exploited, but some curated vaults took losses in the November 2025 Stream Finance collapse.

How we rate

What it’s used for

Most users never touch Morpho directly: they deposit through a wallet, exchange or app that uses a Morpho vault behind the scenes, or borrow against crypto through a partner interface. Coinbase, for example, uses Morpho to power loans backed by bitcoin. Curators decide which markets a vault lends into, and depositors earn the interest those markets pay.

Evidence of real use

  • Morpho says companies including Coinbase, Robinhood and Société Générale build on its lending network. Source
  • Morpho Vaults V2 launched on September 30, 2025, after audits that included a Sherlock contest. Source
  • Governance enabled MORPHO transferability on November 21, 2024, about two years after the token was created. Source

How Morpho works

The base layer of Morpho is a set of lending markets, each with one collateral asset, one loan asset, a price oracle and a fixed liquidation threshold. Once a market is created, its rules cannot be changed, and problems in one market do not spread automatically to others. Anyone can create a market by choosing from parameters that governance has approved. The core contract is intentionally small, which makes it easier to audit.

On top sit vaults. A vault pools deposits and spreads them across several markets according to rules set by a curator, often a specialist risk firm. Depositors pick a vault based on the curator and its strategy, so the quality of that curator matters a great deal. Vaults V2, released in 2025, lets curators allocate across more kinds of markets while keeping deposits non-custodial. Many partner apps simply plug into a vault and show users a single yield number.

MORPHO holders vote on which parameters markets may use, upgrades to peripheral contracts, treasury grants and whether to switch on a protocol fee of up to a set share of borrower interest. Morpho Labs, the main development company, became a wholly owned subsidiary of the nonprofit Morpho Association in 2025 so that MORPHO is the project's only asset. The original MORPHO contract on Ethereum could not support on-chain voting features, so holders now use a wrapped version of the token.

Key moments

  1. 2022Morpho launches its first product, an optimizer that sat on top of Aave and Compound.
  2. 2024Morpho Blue, the isolated-market design now simply called Morpho, launches in January.
  3. 2024MORPHO becomes transferable on November 21 after a governance vote.
  4. 2025Morpho Labs becomes a subsidiary of the Morpho Association; Vaults V2 launches in September.
  5. 2025The Stream Finance xUSD collapse in November causes losses in some curated vaults with exposure.

Supply

MORPHO has a maximum supply of 1 billion tokens, allocated among the DAO, users, contributors, the Morpho Association and strategic partners, with vesting for insiders. The protocol fee switch had not been activated as of late September 2026, so there is no fee-based buyback or burn.

Risks to understand

  • Curator risk: a vault is only as safe as the curator's choices; a bad allocation can leave depositors with bad debt.
  • Oracle and collateral risk: each market depends on its price feed and collateral asset, and exotic collateral can fail suddenly, as the 2025 Stream Finance episode showed.
  • Liquidity risk: if borrowers use most of a market's funds, withdrawals from vaults can be delayed until loans are repaid or liquidated.
  • Token value is not tied to protocol fees today, and any future fee switch depends on a governance vote.
  • Smart-contract risk, especially in newer vault versions and third-party integrations.

Morpho FAQ

Does Morpho hold my money?

No company holds deposits; funds sit in smart contracts. But the curator of a vault decides where those funds are lent, so you are trusting their risk choices.

Does MORPHO earn a share of fees?

Not as of October 2026. Governance can turn on a protocol fee, but the switch was off and holders have no direct claim on revenue.

How is Morpho different from Aave?

Aave runs large shared pools with risk settings managed by its DAO, while Morpho uses many small isolated markets with fixed rules and lets independent curators build vaults on top.
