What is Midnight?

Midnight is a blockchain built by the team behind Cardano that lets developers create apps which prove facts with zero-knowledge proofs without exposing private data. Its NIGHT token is public and unshielded; holding it generates DUST, a private, non-transferable resource used to pay transaction fees. Mainnet launched in March 2026 under a federated validator set.

Utility Lens

What Midnight actually does

Lets developers build applications that verify information, such as identity or compliance checks, while keeping the underlying data private.

Real-world usage
earlyMainnet is live and contracts can be deployed, but application usage is still small.
Token necessity
integralHolding NIGHT generates the DUST needed for fees, though fees can be sponsored by apps on users' behalf.
Decentralization
limitedBlock production is currently run by a federated set of approved node operators, with wider participation planned for later phases.
Track record
newThe token launched in December 2025 and mainnet in March 2026, giving it under a year of live history.

How we rate

What it’s used for

As of October 2026 Midnight is early: permissionless smart contract deployment is live on mainnet, wallets such as Gero support shielded balances, and first applications are deploying. Most NIGHT activity is still trading and holding, partly because many holders are receiving airdropped tokens in phases.

Evidence of real use

  • NIGHT has a total supply of 24 billion and launched in December 2025, with distribution through the Glacier Drop to holders of several major cryptocurrencies and a later open Scavenger Mine phase. Source
  • Midnight's September 2026 network update reported that permissionless smart contract deployment is live on mainnet. Source
  • Payments company Worldpay and exchange Bullish were announced as federated node operators ahead of mainnet. Source

How Midnight works

Midnight uses zero-knowledge smart contracts. A zero-knowledge proof lets an app show that something is true, for example that a user is over 18 or passed a compliance check, without revealing the underlying data. Developers can choose which information stays private and which is published, an approach the project calls rational or programmable privacy. This differs from privacy coins, whose main goal is hiding payments.

Midnight splits its economics into two units. NIGHT is the public, unshielded native token used for governance and validator rewards, and it can live on both Cardano and Midnight. Holding NIGHT continuously generates DUST, a shielded resource that pays for transactions and contract execution. DUST cannot be transferred or traded, which keeps fees separate from token speculation and lets apps sponsor fees so users don't need tokens at all.

The network launched its mainnet genesis block in late March 2026 in a phase called Kūkolu, run by trusted federated node operators including firms such as Worldpay and Bullish. Later phases are planned to open block production more widely, including to Cardano stake pool operators. NIGHT itself was distributed mainly by airdrop, and claimed tokens unlock gradually through a thawing schedule rather than all at once.

Key moments

  1. 2025The Glacier Drop runs from August to October for eligible holders of ADA, BTC, ETH, SOL, XRP, BNB, AVAX and BAT, followed by the Scavenger Mine.
  2. 2025NIGHT launches as a Cardano native asset in December, and phased redemption of claimed tokens begins.
  3. 2026Midnight mainnet produces its genesis block in late March under federated node operators.
  4. 2026Permissionless smart contract deployment goes live on mainnet, per the September network update.

Supply

NIGHT has a fixed total supply of 24 billion tokens. Most was allocated through community distributions, with airdropped tokens thawing over a 450-day schedule and redemption windows running into December 2026, so circulating supply rises over time. Fees are paid in DUST, which is generated by holding NIGHT rather than by spending it.

Risks to understand

  • Block production is federated, so the network currently depends on a small set of approved operators.
  • Ongoing airdrop thawing and redemption add supply to the market.
  • Application adoption is unproven, and the two-unit NIGHT and DUST model is new and untested at scale.
  • Regulatory treatment of privacy-enhancing technology is evolving in the US and EU, even for selective-disclosure designs.

Midnight FAQ

Is Midnight a privacy coin?

Not in the usual sense. NIGHT itself is public; privacy applies to app data and DUST-paid transactions through zero-knowledge smart contracts.

What is DUST?

A shielded, non-transferable resource generated by holding NIGHT. It pays for transactions and smart contracts on Midnight.

Is Midnight mainnet live?

Yes. Mainnet launched in late March 2026 and is currently secured by federated node operators, with broader participation planned.
