What is Ethena?
ENA is the governance token of Ethena, the protocol that issues the USDe synthetic dollar. ENA does not back USDe and its price floats. Holders vote on protocol matters, and in 2026 they approved a fee switch that ties protocol revenue to ENA buybacks once set milestones are reached.

What Ethena actually does
Gives holders a say in Ethena's governance and a potential link to protocol revenue through buybacks.
- Real-world usage
- growingThe protocol ENA governs has real usage through USDe, but ENA itself is used mainly for trading and governance.
- Token necessity
- optionalUSDe minting, redemption and staking work without anyone holding ENA.
- Decentralization
- limitedVotes exist, but Ethena-linked entities, a Risk Committee, custodians and centralized exchanges play central roles.
- Track record
- developingENA launched in April 2024; the protocol faced a 2025 German regulatory shutdown and a brief USDe crash on Binance in October 2025.
What it’s used for
Holders stake ENA as sENA to take part in governance and signal long-term alignment. ENA is also widely traded, and it has been used in Ethena's incentive campaigns.
Role of the ENA token:
Evidence of real use
- ENA is Ethena's governance token, staked as sENA, with a Risk Committee setting parameters including the conditions for the fee switch. Source
- Ethena airdropped 750 million ENA, 5% of supply, when the token launched on April 2, 2024. Source
- A fee-switch vote passed in a Snapshot held August 27 to September 2, 2026, with buybacks set to switch on when USDe supply reaches a set milestone. Source
How Ethena works
Ethena runs two kinds of tokens that are easy to confuse. USDe is the dollar-denominated token backed by hedged crypto and stable assets, and sUSDe is its income-earning staked form. ENA is separate: a governance token with a floating price that does not back USDe or guarantee its value. If USDe ran into trouble, ENA holders would not be protected, and ENA's price would likely suffer.
ENA holders take part through Ethena's governance forum and on-chain votes. Staking ENA as sENA is the main route to participating. A standing Risk Committee, whose membership is itself subject to governance, sets technical parameters such as which assets can back USDe, exposure limits and when mechanisms like the fee switch turn on, so token holders do not decide every detail directly.
For years ENA had no direct claim on protocol revenue. In September 2026 holders approved a fee switch under which protocol revenue funds programmatic ENA buybacks once milestones are reached, including a USDe supply threshold. Until those conditions are met, the buybacks are not running, and the amounts will depend on Ethena's revenue, which rises and falls with crypto funding rates.
Key moments
- 2024USDe launches in February; ENA launches on April 2 with a 750 million token airdrop.
- 2025BaFin orders Ethena GmbH to wind down its German USDe business; in October USDe briefly trades at $0.65 on Binance.
- 2026ENA holders approve a fee switch linking protocol revenue to ENA buybacks once milestones are met.
Supply
ENA has a total supply of 15 billion tokens, of which 5% was airdropped at launch. Allocations for the team, investors and ecosystem unlock over time, increasing circulating supply. The approved fee switch could fund buybacks once its milestones are met.
Risks to understand
- Dependence on USDe: ENA's value is tied to the success of USDe, which faces funding-rate, exchange and custody risks.
- Unlock risk: scheduled unlocks from the 15 billion supply can add selling pressure.
- Conditional revenue link: buybacks only start once milestones are met and depend on volatile protocol revenue.
- Regulatory risk: regulators in Germany have already acted against Ethena's USDe business, and US treatment of synthetic dollars is unsettled.
Ethena FAQ
Is ENA the same as USDe?
No. USDe is Ethena's synthetic dollar; ENA is the governance token with a floating price.
What does staking ENA do?
Staking ENA as sENA is the main way to take part in Ethena governance.
Does ENA receive Ethena's revenue?
A fee switch approved in September 2026 directs revenue to ENA buybacks, but only after set milestones such as a USDe supply level are reached.
