What is Lighter?
Lighter is a decentralized exchange for perpetual futures that runs as an Ethereum layer 2 and uses zero-knowledge proofs to verify its order matching and liquidations. LIT, launched in December 2025, is its token, and exchange revenue has been used to buy it back. Lighter's own terms exclude US residents.
Utility Lens
What Lighter actually does
LIT is Lighter's protocol token, supported by buybacks funded with exchange revenue and used for ecosystem incentives.
- Real-world usage
- growingLighter has drawn significant perps trading since its 2025 mainnet and added a Robinhood Wallet integration in 2026.
- Token necessity
- optionalThe exchange works without LIT; the token mainly captures value through buybacks.
- Decentralization
- limitedA single company runs the sequencer and interface, though zero-knowledge proofs and Ethereum settlement limit what the operator can fake.
- Track record
- developingPublic mainnet opened in October 2025 and LIT launched in December 2025; we found no major exploit in our review.
What it’s used for
Traders use Lighter to open leveraged perpetual futures positions with stablecoin collateral; they do not need LIT to trade. LIT was distributed largely to early users through an airdrop, and the protocol has used exchange revenue to repurchase it. Since July 2026, Robinhood Wallet has offered in-app perps trading routed through Lighter.
Role of the LIT token:
Evidence of real use
- Lighter opened its public mainnet on October 2, 2025, using custom zero-knowledge circuits to verify matching and liquidations while keeping user assets on Ethereum. Source
- Lighter's terms state its services are not available to persons who reside in or are located in the United States. Source
- Robinhood's US help center describes perpetual futures traded on Lighter through Robinhood Wallet, with restrictions and eligibility requirements. Source
How Lighter works
Lighter runs an order-book exchange as an Ethereum layer 2. Orders are matched off the main Ethereum chain for speed, and zero-knowledge proofs, which are compact cryptographic receipts, show that matching and liquidations followed the rules. User funds stay anchored to Ethereum. That design aims to give exchange-like speed with stronger guarantees than a company database, though a single operator still runs the system day to day.
Most activity is perpetual futures: contracts that track a price and never expire, traded with leverage and kept near the spot price by hourly funding payments between longs and shorts. Leverage multiplies losses, and if your margin runs low the protocol liquidates your position. LIT launched on December 30, 2025, with a quarter of its 1 billion supply airdropped to early users, and Lighter has used exchange revenue to buy LIT back.
Key moments
- 2025Lighter opens its public mainnet on October 2 after about eight months of private beta.
- 2025LIT launches on December 30 with 25% of supply airdropped to users.
- 2026Robinhood Wallet begins offering perps trading through Lighter on Robinhood Chain in July.
Supply
LIT has a maximum supply of 1 billion tokens. Half is allocated to the ecosystem, including the 25% airdrop and future incentives, and half to the team and investors on vesting schedules. Lighter has used exchange revenue to buy back LIT, which offsets some unlock pressure but depends on trading activity.
Risks to understand
- Leverage risk: perpetual futures can wipe out your margin quickly, and losses can exceed what beginners expect.
- US access is restricted: Lighter's own interface excludes US residents; any US access through a third-party app depends on that app's eligibility rules.
- Insider unlocks: half of LIT supply belongs to the team and investors and unlocks over time.
- Operator and smart-contract risk: one company runs the sequencer, and bugs in contracts or proof systems could put funds at risk.
Lighter FAQ
Can US residents use Lighter?
Lighter's own terms exclude US residents as of October 2026. Robinhood's US help center describes perps on Lighter through Robinhood Wallet with eligibility requirements, so check Robinhood's rules rather than using Lighter directly.
Do I need LIT to trade on Lighter?
No. Trading uses stablecoin collateral. LIT is the protocol's token, supported by revenue-funded buybacks.
What does zero-knowledge mean here?
Lighter produces cryptographic proofs that its order matching and liquidations followed the protocol's rules, so outsiders can verify them without trusting the operator's word.
